The Pehlivanian Professional Opera Academy (PPOA), established under the leadership of Maestro George Pehlivanian, is a significant pillar in the global opera landscape. PPOA offers comprehensive training for conductors and vocalists from around the world, focusing on skill enhancement. Every summer, PPOA stages an opera production across various Slovenian cities, enriching the local cultural offerings.
Unique Feature of PPOA:
A unique opera performance that combines the performances of various conductors and singers, allowing the audience to perceive and enjoy the subtle differences between individual artists and observe their mutual communication and interaction with the audience. Additionally, PPOA's distinctive approach involves multiple singers interpreting the same main or supporting roles, enriching the opera experience, and providing a deeper insight into each performer's artistic expression.
On its fifth anniversary in 2024, PPOA will stage Puccini's "La Bohème," continuing a series of successfully semi - staged operas that have attracted over 25,000 visitors and contributed to the popularization of opera among a broader audience.
PPOA and the POA Festival Orchestra play a key role in making classical music accessible in smaller towns, facilitating the spread of musical knowledge and cultural exchange. The orchestra's tours bring high-quality live classical music to communities typically less exposed to such events.
Each year, the academy accepts over 30 singers from around the world to participate in practical training in performing opera roles under the guidance of Maestro Pehlivanian and his teaching team (including Janez Lotrič, a Slovenian tenor ranked among the world's top six tenors; and Kristin Okerlund, an award-winning pianist who has collaborated with Pavarotti, Domingo, Carreras, Bonisolli, Kraus, Gruberova, Zampieri, Raimondi, Bruson, Nucci, etc.). This initiative allows professional singers to gain international experience. The Pehlivanian Professional Opera Academy and its orchestra, dedicated to education and the performance of classical music, build bridges between different cultures and generations, significantly contributing to enriching cultural heritage and the professional development of young professional talents in opera.
